SOUTH KOREA: South Korea is set to accelerate the electrification of heating, with plans to make heat pump installation largely mandatory in new homes from 2030, according to Climate Minister Kim Sung-hwan. The move aims to address the delayed transition away from fossil fuel-based heating, which accounts for nearly half of final energy consumption, and support the country’s 2050 carbon neutrality goal.
The government targets deploying 3.5 million heat pumps by 2035, initially prioritising detached homes and areas without city gas infrastructure, while older apartments may be retrofitted gradually. Rising renewable energy capacity and expanded energy storage systems are expected to support this shift and reduce reliance on LNG. Despite challenges such as high installation costs and limited consumer awareness, authorities emphasise long-term efficiency and environmental benefits.
