Sarajevo Advances District Heating Heat Pump Project

Bosnia and Herzegovina: Sarajevo Canton, Bosnia and Herzegovina, has secured EUR 0.5 million (USD 0.57 million; EUR 0.5 million) in grant funding from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to support the development of a heat pump project for the canton’s district heating system. The funding will be used to procure consultancy services for the main project related to the gas pipeline transmission system within the Sarajevo Toplane – District Heating project. The initiative, first launched in 2022, is intended to reduce dependence on fossil fuel imports and support the modernisation of the district heating network. The overall project is valued at more than EUR 20 million (USD 22.8 million; EUR 20 million).

The project involves the installation of a 36 MW water-to-water heat pump system that will use treated wastewater from the Butile wastewater treatment plant as its heat source. Implementation is planned in two phases, each including an 18 MW heat pump and the expansion of district heating networks connecting multiple boiler plants in the municipalities of Novi Grad and Novo Sarajevo. According to the Sarajevo Canton authorities, the project has been reinstated following earlier delays and has been included in the canton’s Public Investment Programme, with the aim of improving the efficiency, stability and long-term energy security of the district heating system.
