USA: San Francisco has introduced a new program offering residents bill credits of up to USD 1200 bill credits to encourage the switch from gas-powered to clean, efficient heat pump water heaters. Customers of CleanPowerSF, the city-run renewable energy program, can apply and receive a USD 50 monthly bill credit for two years, or up to three years for those enrolled in discount programs such as CARE/FERA. The initiative targets around 1,000 participants annually. Standard heat pump installation in San Francisco costs between USD 6,000 and USD 9,000, compared to USD 2,000 to USD 3,000 for a gas-powered unit. Despite the higher upfront costs, heat pumps are up to seven times more efficient and help lower long-term energy bills while reducing pollution and fire risks.
