RICS Survey Signals Improved Construction Sentiment in Australia

Australia: The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) has reported improving conditions in Australia’s construction industry in 2025, led by private non-residential work and infrastructure and public projects. The latest Global Construction Monitor showed the Construction Sentiment Index rising to plus 21 from plus 15, returning to levels last seen in 2023. Infrastructure performance remained supported by stronger activity in areas such as energy, water and waste, transport and ICT, while private residential activity eased from earlier highs.

The survey also reported continued pressure from higher material costs and persistent skills and labour shortages. Respondents highlighted shortages of skilled tradespeople, quantity surveyors and managers as key constraints, while credit conditions moved into negative territory across short and medium-term expectations. Despite these pressures, expectations for the next 12 months remained positive across major sectors, with respondents forecasting rising workloads in both private non-residential construction and infrastructure.
