Renovation Spending Holds Firm as Homeowners Prioritise Long-Term Living Spaces in 2026 Outlook

USA: Home renovation activity in the United States remained strong in 2025, with 54% of homeowners undertaking projects, according to the Houzz & Home Study 2026. Median spending stayed at $20,000, although high-end renovations increased, with the top 10% reaching $150,000. However, planned spending for 2026 has softened to $15,000, reflecting a more cautious outlook.

The study highlights a clear shift towards “forever homes,” with 61% of homeowners intending to stay in their homes long-term. Renovations are largely driven by delayed demand, financial readiness, and life changes such as remote work and accessibility needs. Kitchens remain the most popular upgrade, while professionals are used in over 90% of projects, and credit card usage for financing continues to rise.
