Portugal: Portugal secures EUR 1.34 billion in European Investment Bank (EIB) funding to build and renovate 12,000 affordable rental homes, in what officials call a landmark investment in housing, social cohesion, and economic resilience. The first tranche of EUR 450 million was signed at the prime minister’s residence in Lisbon, giving municipalities until 2030 to present housing solutions, beyond the previous June 2026 deadline under the Recovery and Resilience Plan. The financing line offers lower interest rates and longer grace periods, and discussions are ongoing for additional support under the “1st Right” housing programme. Infrastructure and housing minister Miguel Pinto Luz thanked the EIB for its role in Portugal’s development, while EIB vice-president Ioannis Tsakiris hailed the agreement as “historic,” calling affordable housing essential for families, youth, communities, economic competitiveness, and climate goals.
