Energy-Saving Measures

Philippines: The government of the Philippines has introduced energy saving measures for public institutions in response to rising fuel costs linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. National government agencies, state universities and colleges, and local government units have been instructed to reduce fuel consumption by at least 10%. Measures include limiting air-conditioning settings to no lower than 24 degrees Celsius, reducing official travel and introducing flexible work arrangements in government offices. Authorities have also indicated that a four-day working week could be considered if fuel supply pressures increase.

The country relies on imports for most of its oil requirements, making it vulnerable to global price fluctuations. Officials have stated that the government is also evaluating support measures such as fuel subsidies for the transport sector, farmers and fishers. Public authorities have encouraged citizens to adopt energy-saving practices, including reduced travel and greater use of public transport. Business organisations have noted that any changes to work schedules would need to consider the operational requirements of sectors such as manufacturing.
