Poland: Orlen Termika has announced a tender for what is expected to become Europe’s largest flue gas condensation and heat pump installation at the Żerań Combined Heat and Power Plant in Warsaw. The system will recover approximately 145 megawatts of thermal power and is projected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by around 137,000 tonnes annually while cutting natural gas consumption by 33 million cubic metres per year. The recovered heat will be used to supply district heating water, classified as waste heat under current efficiency regulations. Commissioning of the facility is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2029.
The project forms part of a wider modernisation initiative at the Żerań plant, which also includes the construction of a large heat accumulator planned for completion in 2027. This development supports Orlen Termika’s goal of completely phasing out coal use by 2035 as part of Poland’s broader energy transition and decarbonisation efforts.
