Ontario Tables Legislation to Accelerate Housing and Infrastructure Projects

Canada: Ontario’s housing minister has introduced new legislation intended to accelerate residential construction and reduce development costs. The proposed measures also aim to fast-track road and transit projects across the province. The legislation is part of broader efforts to address Ontario’s housing challenges, though the government’s target of building 1.5 million homes by 2031 was not referenced in the official announcement. Officials later confirmed that the province is not currently on track to meet this goal. Recent data from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation indicated a 46 per cent year-on-year decline in housing starts across Ontario in March for communities with populations of 10,000 or more.

The new bill was presented shortly before the provincial budget release and was announced alongside several senior government and municipal officials. The Ontario Home Builders’ Association expressed support for the initiative, noting that the industry has consistently raised concerns regarding development charges and delays in permitting and approvals. The legislation is positioned to address these issues in an effort to facilitate more efficient housing development across the province.
