New BEE Star Ratings Likely to Increase AC and Refrigerator Prices in India from January 2026
BEE Star Rating

India: Revised star rating norms issued by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency are expected to push up the prices of cooling appliances such as room air conditioners and refrigerators from January 1, 2026. Under the updated system, the new 5-star air conditioner is designed to be about 10% more energy efficient but may cost around 10% more, while refrigerator prices could rise by around 5%. The price increases are likely to nearly offset the benefit consumers received from the 10% goods and services tax cut on room air conditioners implemented in September 2025.

Industry sources note that stricter energy efficiency requirements mean many existing products will be reclassified to lower star ratings, prompting manufacturers to redesign appliances to meet the new benchmarks. For example, a 5-star AC under the 2025 system will be reclassified as 4-star under the 2026 norms unless upgraded. Cost pressures from weaker rupees and higher raw material prices are also contributing to the expected price adjustments for these household appliances.
