Morbi Ceramics Industry Seeks Cut in GST on Tiles and Sanitaryware

India: The ceramics industry in Morbi, which supplies 80% of India’s tile production, has petitioned the central government to reduce the Goods and Services Tax applied to tiles and sanitaryware from 18% to 5%. The Morbi Ceramic Manufacturers Association (MCMA) contends that classifying these goods as luxury items is inaccurate, given that tiles serve as a practical and economical alternative to marble and granite for affordable housing.

The Morbi ceramics cluster comprises over eight hundred units, primarily MSMEs, with an annual turnover of fifty thousand crore rupees and exports amounting to eighteen thousand crore rupees, reaching more than 150 countries. The industry directly and indirectly employs nearly one million people, underscoring its significance to both the regional economy and national export levels.
