Morbi Ceramic Industry Rebounds as Fuel Supplies Stabilize

INDIA: Morbi ceramic industry has largely resumed operations following a two-month disruption caused by fuel shortages linked to the Iran conflict. Nearly all of the town's 750 ceramic manufacturing units are now operational as supplies of piped natural gas and propane have normalised, enabling thousands of migrant workers to return.

However, the crisis has significantly increased production costs, with manufacturers reporting tile price increases across product categories. The sector also experienced a sharp decline in exports, which reportedly fell by nearly 50% during the disruption. While export recovery remains uncertain, robust domestic demand has helped cushion the impact. Industry representatives estimate that the domestic market is generating an additional monthly turnover of approximately US$115 million (around ₹1,000 crore), helping offset part of the export losses. Morbi, which accounts for about 90% of India's ceramic production, continues to benefit from inventory replenishment and sustained demand in the domestic construction sector.
