Indian Govt's 'Make in India' Boosts Growth of Japanese High-Tech Toilet Maker TOTO
INDIA: A decade ago, when Narendra Modi took office as India’s 15th Prime Minister, a Japanese tech-driven toilet brand entered the Indian market, setting the stage for remarkable growth over the next 10 years. TOTO, the world’s largest manufacturer of bathroom fixtures and fittings, began its Indian operations with a manufacturing facility in Halol, Gujarat. Japanese high-tech toilet maker TOTO's India unit has witnessed 6 times growth in its sales as it works at it Halol plant under PM Modi's 'Make in India' initiative.
Marking 10 years in India, TOTO continues to see significant growth opportunities in the country. Its Halol plant not only caters to domestic demand but also aligns with PM Modi’s ‘Make in India’ initiative by producing for global markets. After evaluating various locations, TOTO chose Gujarat for its strategic advantages, including proximity to ports, reliable energy supply, and abundant clay resources essential for production, thanks to the state’s closeness to mountain regions.
“At the Halol plant, we are manufacturing the products as per the global standards which not only caters to Indian markets but also to the global markets and that is the uniqueness of our facility. Ultimately, we are in line with Make in India mission,” TOTO India MD Shiozawa Kazuyuki told ET NOW Digital. “We concentrate to make our products with our India employees.” On how has Modi government's 'Make in India' initiative has helped them, he added, "If we don't have a factory, we need to import. So, if we think about the product costs, making in India would be more cost efficient."
Additionally, Gujarat's strong logistics and supply chain infrastructure further solidified its position as the ideal location for TOTO’s operations. Looking ahead, the company is now targeting emerging smart cities beyond traditional metropolitan areas, focusing on regions experiencing rapid infrastructure development and state-level growth.
