Heat Pump Incentive Program for Homeowners

CANADA: The Manitoba government has unveiled a new heat pump incentive program encouraging homeowners to upgrade their heating and cooling systems to geothermal heat pumps, potentially saving them up to USD 1,000 annually on energy bills. Eligibility for the program and the level of support offered depend on a homeowner’s current heating fuel type, location, household income, and whether they are part of specific groups such as First Nation communities, oil-heated households, or multi-unit residential buildings. CEO of Efficiency Manitoba emphasized that installation costs will vary based on household circumstances but estimates that 60 to 75 per cent of the cost will be covered by incentives. The remaining 25 to 40 per cent will be paid gradually through the homeowner's monthly heating bill, ensuring immediate savings. No upfront costs will be required as contractors are paid directly by Efficiency Manitoba. The agency expects to spend about USD  10 million annually on the program, though the actual amount may increase based on public response.

While the NDP had previously promised to fully fund heat pump installations for 5,000 homes over four years, the updated program includes partial repayment.
