India: The government has made energy efficiency star labelling mandatory for a wider range of appliances from January 1, 2026, according to a gazette notification issued by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency. The revised regulation will cover refrigerators, televisions, LPG gas stoves, cooling towers and chillers and will also apply to deep freezers, distribution transformers and grid connected solar inverters. Earlier, star labelling for several of these products, including frost free and direct cool refrigerators, deep freezers, room air conditioners across multiple configurations, colour televisions and ultra high definition televisions, was voluntary.
An official said the list of mandatory appliances for star labelling is updated from time to time. Star labelling was already mandatory for products such as room air conditioners, electric ceiling fans, storage type electric water heaters, washing machines, tubular fluorescent lamps and self ballasted LED lamps, with norms upgraded periodically to improve energy efficiency standards.
