Local Assembly Boosts Production, Yet Chinese Brands Remain Bangladesh’s AC Market Leaders

Bangladesh’s air conditioner market is undergoing rapid transformation as rising temperatures, urbanisation, and improving household incomes continue driving strong demand for residential cooling solutions. While local manufacturing and assembly operations have expanded significantly over the past decade, Chinese AC brands continue dominating the market through competitive pricing, extensive dealer networks, and strong consumer perception regarding performance and reliability.

The country’s AC market has shifted from being largely dependent on imported finished products to a more locally assembled ecosystem supported by government incentives and private-sector investment. However, despite the rise of domestic manufacturing, international Chinese brands such as Gree, Midea, Haier, and Hisense continue maintaining a significant market advantage over local players including Walton, Vision, Jamuna, and Singer.

Rising Cooling Demand Reshaping the Market

Bangladesh’s cooling demand has increased rapidly in recent years due to prolonged heatwaves and rising urban living standards. Summer temperatures have repeatedly crossed 40°C in several regions, increasing household dependence on air conditioning systems. At the same time, easier access to consumer financing and the growing availability of affordable inverter ACs have expanded the customer base beyond upper-income households.

According to market estimates, Bangladesh’s annual AC sales surpassed 1 million units in recent years, with inverter ACs accounting for a growing share of total demand. Chinese brand Gree currently leads the market followed closely by local manufacturer Walton while Midea and Haier together account for a sizeable portion of the remaining market.

Chinese manufacturers have been particularly successful in Bangladesh’s mid-range residential segment by offering energy-efficient inverter ACs at highly competitive prices. Entry-level inverter models from Chinese brands are commonly available between BDT 45,000 and BDT 70,000, making them accessible to a wider middle-income population. This aggressive pricing strategy has become one of the key factors behind their continued dominance.

Local Manufacturing Expands, but Chinese Brands Lead

Bangladesh’s government has increasingly encouraged local electronics manufacturing through tax benefits and VAT incentives aimed at reducing import dependency. As a result, several local assembly plants have been established across the country.

Walton has emerged as the largest domestic AC manufacturer and continues investing heavily in expanding production capacity. The company promotes its “Made in Bangladesh” positioning and manufactures various AC components locally to improve cost competitiveness. At the same time, several international brands have also strengthened localisation strategies through partnerships with Bangladeshi manufacturers and distributors.

Companies such as Fair Electronics now manufacture Hisense and Samsung ACs locally, while Electro Mart has expanded assembly operations for Gree-branded products. BRG estimates that only around 20–25% of ACs sold in Bangladesh are now fully imported, highlighting the growing importance of local assembly operations.

Despite this localisation trend, Chinese brands continue outperforming many domestic competitors due to stronger technology integration, wider product portfolios, and better-established after-sales service networks. Consumers increasingly prioritise inverter efficiency, faster cooling performance, low electricity consumption, and warranty coverage when selecting AC systems, areas where Chinese brands have built strong market recognition.

Local Assembly Strengthens Chinese Presence

An interesting characteristic of Bangladesh's AC market is that localisation has not necessarily reduced the influence of Chinese brands. Instead, local manufacturing has often strengthened their market position. Several Chinese brands have partnered with Bangladeshi companies to establish local assembly and production facilities. Electro Mart, the local partner for Gree, established a manufacturing facility in Sonargaon to support growing domestic demand. Similarly, Fair Electronics manufactures and assembles international brands within Bangladesh, helping reduce import costs and improve product availability.

One of the clearest indicators of this dominance is Gree's market performance. BRG estimates Gree’s share to be over 25%, making it one of the leading AC brands in Bangladesh. In addition, Chinese manufacturers especially GREE has built extensive nationwide dealer and service networks, allowing them to strengthen customer confidence through faster installation and maintenance support. This has become particularly important as first-time AC buyers increasingly emerge from secondary cities and semi-urban regions.

As a result, a significant portion of locally assembled air conditioners sold in Bangladesh continues to be associated with international, particularly Chinese, brands. This enables manufacturers to combine local production advantages with globally recognised technologies and brands.

Outlook: Competition Will Shift Beyond Price

Bangladesh's AC market is expected to maintain strong growth over the coming years, supported by rising temperatures, increasing urban housing construction, and growing consumer awareness of energy-efficient technologies. Industry participants estimate annual market growth of approximately 10–12% in the medium term.

Local manufacturers are expected to continue expanding production capacity and increasing localisation levels. However, Chinese brands are also likely to deepen their presence through further manufacturing investments, product innovation, and stronger after-sales service networks.

As market penetration increases, competition is expected to move beyond pricing alone. Energy efficiency, smart features, inverter technology, sustainability, and customer service will increasingly influence purchasing decisions. Chinese brands have already established strong capabilities in these areas, placing them in a favourable position to maintain their leadership.

While Bangladesh's manufacturing ecosystem continues to strengthen, the country's cooling market remains heavily influenced by Chinese technology and brands. Local production is growing rapidly, but Chinese manufacturers continue to set the benchmark for innovation, scale, and consumer preference, ensuring their dominant position in Bangladesh's evolving air conditioning industry.
