Kenya Tackles Housing Deficit with Affordable Housing and Industry Innovation
Kenya: Kenya’s construction industry players have been encouraged to align with the government’s affordable housing program to drive growth, create jobs, and address the country’s housing deficit. Speaking at the launch of BINAA, a comprehensive hub for building and home finishing solutions in Karen, Nairobi, Kikuyu MP and Leader of the Majority, Kimani Ichungwa, emphasized the program's potential as “a pathway to inclusive economic growth,” creating opportunities across the value chain for local businesses, skilled professionals, and manufacturers.
Housing Secretary Said Athman highlighted the pressing housing challenge, with a demand of 250,000 units annually and a deficit of 3 million units as of December 2023. Athman stated that the construction of 130,000 units under the program has generated demand for over 7 million tiles, 350,000 sanitary ware, and 820 lifts, presenting vast opportunities for suppliers and contractors.
BINAA, Kenya’s first one-stop hub for high-quality building materials and expert services, aims to simplify the construction process. Ahmed Mohamed, BINAA’s resident architect, described the hub as an initiative to empower builders and homeowners with reliable materials, innovative solutions, and expert support. BINAA will collaborate with the National Construction Authority to upskill and accredit local artisans.
