Japan: Japan reported a 1.4% year-on-year increase in real wages in January, marking the first rise in 13 months, as inflation cooled and nominal wages grew 3.0% to about USD 1,911 per month. Base salaries increased 3.0%, the fastest growth since October 1992, while overtime pay rose 3.3% and special payments, mainly bonuses, climbed 3.8%. The consumer inflation rate used to calculate real wages slowed to 1.7%, the lowest since March 2022, supported by fuel subsidies and fewer food price increases. The data strengthens the case for the Bank of Japan to continue monetary policy normalisation after raising interest rates to 0.75% in December, with the central bank set to review policy during its March 18–19 meeting.
