Japan: Japan’s economy expanded at an annualised rate of 1.1% in Q2 2026, easing from a marginally revised 1.9% growth in Q1 and below market expectations of 2.0%. Private consumption made no contribution to GDP amid elevated cost pressures, while government spending increased due to economic support measures. Capital spending declined further amid mounting geopolitical tensions, while net trade contributed positively as exports rose and imports fell. Analysts warned that rising import costs and upstream price pressures could weigh on household spending later in the year, with private consumption also expected to soften in Q3 following a temporary boost in durable-goods demand, including autos and air conditioners.
