Italy launches biogas-powered district heating and cooling system

Italy: Italy has introduced its first integrated district heating and cooling system powered entirely by biogas produced from sewage sludge. The facility, located in Peschiera Borromeo near Milan, uses anaerobic digestion to generate biogas that supplies both heat and chilled water. Developed by CAP Evolution, the project establishes a new technological model at the national level and supports Gruppo CAP’s long-term decarbonisation plans.

The plant received an investment of over EUR 3 million, with two-thirds funded through the PNRR. It is expected to reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions by about 2,800 tonnes. The system is also projected to provide up to 20 percent energy savings for users connected to the network, reinforcing the role of wastewater treatment facilities in renewable energy production.
