Enhanced NDC Targets

India: The Union Cabinet of India, chaired by Narendra Modi, has approved the enhanced NDC targets, country’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for 2031–2035 to be submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, reinforcing its commitment to climate action under the Paris Agreement. India has set an enhanced target to reduce the emissions intensity of its GDP by 47% by 2035 from 2005 levels, while also aiming to achieve 60% of cumulative installed electric power capacity from non-fossil fuel-based energy sources by 2035. Additionally, the country plans to create a carbon sink of 3.5 to 4.0 billion tonnes of CO₂ equivalent through forest and tree cover by 2035 (from 2005 levels), aligning with its long-term goals of Viksit Bharat @2047 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.

Building on its strong track record, India has already reduced emissions intensity by 36% between 2005 and 2020 and achieved 52.57% non-fossil fuel-based installed power capacity as of February 2026, meeting earlier targets ahead of schedule. The country had also created 2.29 billion tonnes of CO₂ equivalent carbon sink by 2021 through afforestation efforts, which have been recognized by the Food and Agriculture Organisation. India’s climate strategy includes large-scale renewable energy expansion, battery storage, green energy corridors, cleaner manufacturing, and initiatives such as the Green Hydrogen Mission, PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, and international collaborations like the International Solar Alliance and Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure. With a focus on adaptation, resilience, and inclusive growth, the updated NDC reflects a whole-of-government and society approach, integrating sustainability into development while generating opportunities for youth and women and reinforcing India’s leadership in global climate action.
