INDIA: Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi are developing a high-efficiency hybrid air conditioning system designed to cut electricity consumption significantly as demand for cooling rises in India. Early tests of the laboratory-scale prototype suggest it could reduce energy use by around one-third compared with conventional room ACs.
The innovative design combines traditional vapour compression with a compact add-on module that directly removes moisture using a liquid desiccant and a thin polymer membrane, while repurposing waste heat from the outdoor condenser to regenerate the desiccant. This reduces reliance on energy-intensive humidity control and delivers estimated savings of up to 41.5 per cent in drier climates, all while maintaining indoor comfort.
