HUNGARY: Hungary is preparing a multi-year programme to improve the energy efficiency of single-family homes and condominiums under its 2027 budget. The country’s Ministry of Economy and Energy has proposed a HUF 600 billion ($1.83 billion) funding package to support renovations in 15,000 single-family homes and 15,000 condominiums annually, with the aim of benefiting up to 120,000 families by the end of the decade.

The proposed scheme would provide non-repayable grants and interest-subsidised loans covering up to 95% of eligible renovation costs. Single-family homes could receive up to HUF 15.5 million ($47,273), while condominiums would be eligible for funding of up to HUF 5.2 million ($15,860).

According to an analysis by the Hungarian Solar Cell and Solar Collector Association (MNNSZ), the programme would cover nine types of eligible improvements, including solar photovoltaic (PV) system installations. As new PV connections would be subject to gross electricity billing, using generated electricity on-site through technologies such as heat pumps or energy storage systems could improve the financial returns on these investments.
