Netherlands: Hornbach is set to expand its presence in the Netherlands by introducing a smaller DIY store format alongside its large-scale branches. Over the next 10 to 15 years, the company aims to open 15 or more stores, with a realistic target of one new branch per year. While the current Hornbach stores average 18,000 m² and perform well in cities with over 200,000 residents, urbanization trends have created opportunities in smaller cities. Since 2000, the number of cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants in the Netherlands has doubled from 16 to 32. To cater to this growing market, the new smaller format stores will range between 12,000 and 16,000 m², maintaining the same product range and customer experience as the larger branches. The company sees potential for opening stores in approximately 20 cities in the coming years, aiming for nationwide coverage in the medium to long term.

While developing the smaller store format, Hornbach continues to prioritize expanding its traditional large DIY stores, as these remain highly successful. Internationally, the smaller store model has already been implemented, and other DIY retailers, such as Bouwmaat, have also introduced compact formats to optimize their networks. The company is actively seeking new plots of land for large Hornbach branches and remains open to acquisition opportunities in the market.
