Germany: Hispacold has started serial production of HVAC systems using natural refrigerant R290 for buses and rail vehicles. These systems are expected to be deployed first in Germany, with production beginning in the fourth quarter of 2025. The development aligns with the European F-Gas Regulation (EU 517/2014), which aims to encourage the use of refrigerants with lower environmental impact. The new HVAC range emerges from a US$7 million R&D programme launched in 2023. Key attributes include a natural refrigerant with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 3, compliance with A3 safety standards, a modular design that retains the same footprint as conventional systems, and advanced control software targeting energy efficiency and passenger comfort.
