Heat Pumps Overtake Furnaces In US Heating Market

USA: The United States is witnessing a shift in residential heating and cooling trends, with heat pump sales exceeding those of fossil fuel furnaces, according to a report by the Building Decarbonization Coalition. In the first quarter of 2026, heat pump shipments were 32% higher than furnace shipments and approached the level of air-conditioning unit sales. Over the past 15 years, heat pump sales have doubled, reflecting a steady increase in adoption. The trend is also visible in new housing, where heat pumps accounted for 46% of installations in 2024, compared with 47% for forced-air furnaces.
The transition is supported by increasing electrification in buildings and the role of heat pumps in providing both heating and cooling functions. Around three-quarters of new apartments in the country are now designed with electric heating systems, reducing reliance on gas infrastructure. Utilities and developers are also exploring systems such as networked geothermal solutions to improve efficiency. The shift is occurring alongside broader efforts to reduce emissions from buildings and manage energy demand through more efficient technologies.
