India: Gujarat Gas Ltd has reduced the price of piped natural gas (PNG) supplied to ceramic manufacturers in Morbi following industry concerns. The price has been lowered from INR 88 per cubic metre (approximately USD 1.05) to INR 77 per cubic metre (approximately USD 0.92) after negotiations. Despite the reduction, PNG remains around 48 percent more expensive than propane-LPG at INR 52 per standard cubic metre (approximately USD 0.62). The revision narrows the price gap between existing PNG users and tile manufacturers returning to PNG from INR 23 to INR 7.
The price adjustment follows a production disruption in the Morbi ceramic cluster, which accounts for around 90 percent of India’s ceramic industry, after fuel shortages linked to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The Morbi Ceramics Manufacturers Association had increased product prices by 30 to 50 percent on 15 April; however, it stated that prices will remain unchanged despite the reduction in PNG rates.
