NORTH MACEDONIA: A UN-backed Green Finance Facility (GFF) is demonstrating how targeted financial support can accelerate North Macedonia’s green transition while delivering measurable climate and public health benefits. Funded by the UN Joint SDG Fund and led by UNDP North Macedonia, with participation from IOM and support from EBRD and UNECE, the initiative provides affordable green financing to small and medium-sized enterprises and underserved households for renewable energy and energy-efficiency investments.
A UNECE validation study confirms that between 2023 and 2025, the programme generated annual energy savings of 65,345 MWh and reduced emissions by 50,701 tonnes of CO₂ per year. High-efficiency heat pumps emerged as the leading technology driving energy savings and improved air quality, with notable reductions in PM2.5 and PM10. The programme, running through 2027, has raised its targets and signals strong potential for replication beyond North Macedonia.
