Germany’s Barrier Reduction Funding Programme Exhausts 2026 Budget

Germany: Funding under Germany’s barrier reduction programme for 2026 was exhausted on 30 July, according to the Federal Ministry of Construction. Since 8 April, 21,400 applications covering around 26,800 residential units and EUR 46.1 million (USD 53.7 million) in funding had been approved, while further applications remain under processing. The programme supports measures such as installing floor-to-ceiling showers and removing door thresholds. The average subsidy per residential unit was around EUR 1,720 (USD 2,006). Individual measures received grants covering 10% of eligible costs up to EUR 2,500 (USD 2,917), while conversions to the “age-appropriate house” standard were eligible for 12.5%, up to EUR 6,250 (USD 7,292).
The continuation of the programme in 2027 has not yet been decided. A spokeswoman for the ministry said: “the cabinet decision on the 2027 federal budget does not initially provide any further funds for the funding program. Binding statements on the future design and financing of the programme could only be made after the conclusion of the budget deliberations of the German Bundestag.” A decision on future funding is expected after the German Bundestag’s budget deliberations, usually towards the end of November or beginning of December.
