Germany Extends Heat Subsidies to All Homeowners Switching to New Heat Pumps
Germany: This year, homeowners in Germany, including landlords of single-family homes, companies, and municipalities, can apply for subsidies for environmentally friendly heating systems. This marks the third and final funding round of the Heating Act, now open to all eligible groups. Earlier in the year, applications were available to private owners of apartment buildings, owner-occupied single-family homes, and condominium owners' associations with central heating. The heating grants aim to cover at least 30 percent of the costs for replacing an oil or gas burner with a heat pump system in both residential and commercial buildings. In some cases, up to 70 percent of installation costs could be covered, depending on income, and the speed and implementation of the heating system replacement. For homeowners with a taxable annual household income of up to US$50,000 who live in their properties, the basic 30 percent subsidy generally applies.
By 2028, an additional 20 percent speed bonus will be available for the early replacement of old gas and oil heating systems, night storage heaters, and old biomass heating systems. There is also a five percent efficiency bonus for heat pumps that utilize water, soil, or wastewater as a heat source, and for those using natural refrigerants.
