FRANCE: France is accelerating efforts to electrify its economy as the Iran war underscores the risks of relying on imported fossil fuels. Prime Minister Sébastian Lecornu said the shift is now a matter of “national interest,” not just climate policy. The government aims to cut fossil fuel dependence from 60% to 40% by 2030 through wider adoption of electric vehicles, heat pumps, and clean power.
To support this push, state-owned utility Électricité de France has announced a €240 million (US$261 million) package. This includes €30 million (US$33 million) in subsidies for electric trucks, €50 million (US$54 million) for 180 charging stations, €80 million (US$87 million) for new electricity-intensive industries, and €1,000 (US$1,090) grants for 80,000 low-income households to install heat pumps. France is also expanding nuclear and renewable capacity to strengthen energy security.
