Finland: Fortum has commenced operations at its large-scale heat pump plants in Kolabacken, Kirkkonummi, and Hepokorpi, Espoo, as part of its strategy to electrify district heating production and advance toward net-zero emissions by 2040. The facilities include 40 air-to-water heat pumps, 72 water-to-water heat pumps producing up to 180 megawatts of district heating, 200 megawatts of electric boiler capacity across four boilers, and a thermal storage facility of 20,000 m3 / 800 megawatt-hours, supported by a total investment of approximately USD 243 million. Waste heat recovery from Microsoft’s two data centres will begin in phases from next year and is expected to cover around 40% of the annual 2 terawatt-hour district heating demand for approximately 250,000 heat users in the region once fully implemented. Fortum stated that the project, supported by European Union NextGenerationEU funding and Finnish government investment support, will strengthen energy reliability, reduce exposure to fuel price volatility, and support Finland’s clean energy transition.
