UK: Upmarket tile retailer Fired Earth has closed all of its high street stores after entering administration. The company’s 20 UK showrooms, located in affluent areas such as London’s New Kings Road and Islington, have been shut down, resulting in 133 job losses following the appointment of administrators from Leonard Curtis. According to the administrators, the collapse stemmed from prolonged financial strain on the business, which is known for its handmade tiles for kitchens, bathrooms, and floors. Fired Earth was previously owned by cooker manufacturer Aga.

Founded over four decades ago with a focus on terracotta floor tiles, the company later expanded its portfolio to include products sourced from specialist tile makers, along with paints, showers, taps, and baths. Over the years, Fired Earth became renowned for its elegant designs, such as marble mosaics and patterned porcelain tiles, earning praise from Ideal Home magazine for producing “timeless” collections with a distinctive heritage aesthetic. The brand also collaborated with major retailers, including Marks & Spencer.

The closure of Fired Earth represents another significant loss for the UK high street, as retailers continue to face mounting operational costs and subdued consumer spending.
