EU Begins Shaping Post-2030 Energy Efficiency Framework

EUROPE: Following confirmation from the European Environment Agency that the EU27 is on track to achieve its agreed energy and climate targets for the 2020s, the European Union has shifted its focus toward defining energy efficiency priorities for the post-2030 period.

On 18 June, the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Energy (DG Energy) held the first of two stakeholder workshops to discuss the future EU energy efficiency policy framework beyond 2030. The workshop forms part of the broader stakeholder consultation process ahead of legislative proposals expected later this year.

During the session, the Commission presented findings from the recently concluded call for evidence and shared key insights from the ongoing public consultation on the post-2030 energy efficiency framework.

The evidence gathered indicates that the primary shortcoming of the current Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) lies in its weak governance mechanisms and inadequate enforcement, highlighting the need for a more effective implementation framework in the next phase of EU energy efficiency policy.
