DOE and Johnson Controls Collaborate to Accelerate Commercial Heat Pump Innovation
Johnson Controls has partnered with the Department of Energy (DOE) to fast-track the electrification of heating and cooling systems in commercial buildings, aiming to tackle the 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions produced by buildings. Heat pumps are highlighted as a key solution for decarbonizing buildings, yet less than 15% of US commercial buildings use them, especially in colder regions where commercial equipment lags behind residential systems.
Chris Forth, VP Regulatory, Codes and Environmental Affairs at Johnson Controls, stressed the importance of this initiative for decarbonization and noted the growing demand for high-efficiency HVAC systems, including heat pumps. Through the DOE's accelerator program, Johnson Controls and other manufacturers will collaborate with commercial customers and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory to develop and demonstrate cold climate commercial heat pumps for rooftop applications, aiming to improve heating efficiency and lower overall building emissions.
