District Heating Costs Could Increase by 20% in 2027
NETHERLANDS: More than 700,000 Dutch households connected to district heating networks could face higher heating bills in 2027 as European wholesale gas prices have risen sharply in 2026. The Dutch regulator, ACM, is expected to increase the maximum district heating tariff after assessing gas prices through measurements in September, October and November. Energy experts estimate that variable heating tariffs could rise by 40% to 45% if gas prices remain elevated, translating into an overall household heating cost increase of around 20%. The current pricing system links district heating tariffs to natural gas prices, although experts argue that this benchmark is becoming less suitable as the Netherlands moves away from fossil fuels.
