Denmark’s Ørsted Completes Green Transition with Closure of Last Coal Plant for District Heating and Power
Denmark: On August 31, 2024, Ørsted will shut down its last coal-fired combined heat and power plant, Esbjerg Power Station, in Western Denmark. This marks a significant milestone in Ørsted's transformation from one of Europe's most coal-intensive energy companies to a global leader in renewable energy. Ørsted's Senior Vice President, Ole Thomsen, stated, "Shutting down the last of our coal-fired heat and power plants marks the end of a chapter in our green transformation." The closure of Esbjerg Power Station, which consumed approximately 500,000 tonnes of coal yearly, is the final step toward Ørsted's goal of a 99% green energy share by 2025. The company has already reduced its scope 1-2 emissions intensity by 92% from 2006 to 2023 and aims to reduce it by 98% by 2025. Going forward, power production will be covered by other plants and renewable sources, with alternative district heating solutions being established in Esbjerg. Additionally, Ørsted will shut down the coal-fired unit 4 at Studstrup Power Station and unit 21 at Kyndby Peak Load Plant on the same day.
