Singapore: Condominium developers in Singapore are increasingly adopting gas water heaters, with 70% of new private homes connected to town gas now equipped with such systems. According to City Energy, installations in completed projects have risen by 210% between 2023 and 2025 compared to the 2020–2022 period, with more than 360 condominium developments currently using gas heaters. Instantaneous gas water heaters are now used in over 210,000 households 14.3% of all homes in Singapore split between approximately 110,000 private homes and 100,000 HDB units. The surge follows the National Environment Agency’s (NEA) extension of its Mandatory Energy Labelling Scheme to include household water heaters from April 2025. By April 2026, only heaters meeting at least a one-tick efficiency rating will be allowed for sale.

City Energy attributed the trend to consumers seeking energy-efficient and economical appliances. Data from NEA shows that switching from a one-tick electric storage heater to a four-tick gas heater can save households up to 1,200 USD over a 10-year lifespan. A company-commissioned study revealed that gas water heaters emit just 0.19 kg of CO₂ per kilowatt/hour about half the emissions of electric heaters resulting in 80 kg of carbon emissions per user annually compared to 400 kg for electric storage heaters. While gas water heaters make up only 21 of over 200 registered models and typically cost between 550 USD and 1,846 USD, compared with electric heaters priced from USD 100, City Energy aims to make them more affordable through bundled installation and piping services.
