China: Chinese air conditioner manufacturers are finding new growth in Europe as exports to the EU and UK rose 16% to 7.9 million units in the first seven months of 2025 compared with the same period in 2024, according to Chinese customs data. While sales to the US plunged 23% due to ongoing tariff disputes, companies like Gree Electric Appliances and Haier Smart Home have seen demand in Europe surge, particularly in countries such as Serbia, Italy, and Spain. The trend reflects Europe’s shift toward adopting air conditioning as successive heat waves make cooling essential on the world’s fastest warming continent.
Goldman Sachs estimates that only 20% of EU homes currently have air conditioning, a figure expected to rise to 25% by 2030. Industry players, including Japanese manufacturer Hitachi and UK-based Morphy Richards, are also eyeing the region, citing Europe’s high purchasing power, sustained demand for portable ACs, and frequent extreme weather.
