Air Conditioner Exports Surge

China: China’s household air conditioner exports rose sharply in early 2025, thanks to improved product quality and expanded market outreach. Export volumes grew 19.6% year-on-year to 18.8 million units in the first two months, with export value increasing 23.2% to USD 3.4 billion. Exports to Europe surged 51.3%, while shipments to the U.S. fell 18.8%. The U.S. now accounts for just 7.8% of China’s export volume and 6.1% of value, significantly down from 19.2% and 13.5% respectively in 2015, due to past tariffs and trade probes.

Despite decreased direct exports to the U.S., China remains essential to the global aircon supply chain, producing 80% of household air conditioners and 90% of compressors. While U.S. importers may rely on existing inventory after the 125% tariffs, industry experts expect demand to return to China eventually. With untapped potential in emerging markets like Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Africa, and rising demand for smarter, greener models, Chinese brands are targeting non-U.S. regions for growth. Some manufacturers are also adopting asset-light models by assembling products locally to mitigate trade risks and enhance flexibility.
