China Announces USD 54 Billion Capital Injection to Strengthen Financial Sector

China: China's finance ministry is leading a CNY 360 billion (USD 54 billion) capital injection into state-owned insurers and banks to strengthen the country's financial system and support long-term economic growth. China Life Insurance will receive CNY 35 billion (USD 5.2 billion), China Taiping Insurance CNY 7 billion (USD 1.0 billion), People's Insurance Company of China plans to raise up to CNY 15 billion (USD 2.2 billion), while China Export and Credit Insurance Corp and China Reinsurance will receive CNY 10 billion (USD 1.5 billion) and CNY 3 billion (USD 447 million), respectively, to replenish capital and improve solvency. Separately, three state lenders will receive a combined CNY 290 billion (USD 43.2 billion), including Agricultural Bank of China CNY 160 billion (USD 23.8 billion), Industrial and Commercial Bank of China CNY 100 billion (USD 14.9 billion), and the Export-Import Bank of China CNY 30 billion (USD 4.5 billion). The move comes as China's insurance and banking sectors face pressure from persistently low interest rates, weakening loan demand, and declining profitability.
