Building Permit Values Increase in Canada in December Driven by Residential and Institutional Growth

CANADA: In Canada, the total value of building permits rose by 6.8% to $12.8 billion in December 2025, according to Statistics Canada. Residential construction intentions increased by $533.5 million to $8.0 billion, mainly driven by a $653.2 million rise in multi-unit projects, although single-family permits declined by $119.7 million. Growth in multi-unit housing was strongest in Ontario, Manitoba and Quebec. In the non-residential sector, permit values rose by $287.8 million to $4.8 billion, supported by a strong institutional component increase of $412.6 million, while commercial and industrial segments recorded declines. Overall, gains were concentrated in multi-unit housing and institutional projects.
