Belize Introduces New Import Rules for Cooling Equipment to Cut Emissions

Belize: Belize is introducing the Environmental Protection (Ozone Layer Protection) Regulations, 2025 in phases over the next three months to regulate the import of refrigerators, air conditioners, and other cooling equipment. The Department of the Environment (DOE) said the regulations will tighten controls on refrigerants to protect the ozone layer and reduce harmful emissions. Under the new rules, businesses and importers must register with the DOE at a cost of USD 1,000 and obtain a license for each shipment through the government’s online permit system, while certain older and more harmful refrigerants remain fully banned. For households, individuals importing up to two appliances per year for personal use can apply for a special exemption letter costing USD 25, allowing imports without the full business licensing process.
