BANGLADESH: Local air conditioner (AC) manufacturers in Bangladesh are advocating for "fair" government procurement policies, claiming that current regulations favor foreign brands despite local companies meeting international quality standards. They are urging authorities to prioritize product quality over the country of origin. Industry sources report that approximately 600,000 to 650,000 residential AC units are sold annually in Bangladesh.

Additionally, there is a demand for around 40,000 light commercial AC units, including cassette and ceiling-mounted models. The market also sees strong demand for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) solutions, such as variable refrigerant flow (VRF) and chiller systems, designed for large spaces.

Government procurement prices are typically based on the Harmonized System (HS) code, an internationally standardized system for classifying products. However, industry insiders argue that this approach does not always create a level playing field for local manufacturers.

Government purchases follow policies aligned with international standards and the rate schedules set by the Public Works Department.
