BANGLADESH: Bangladesh’s ceramics industry is emerging as a strong export candidate beyond ready-made garments, supported by rapid growth in capacity and investment. The country has more than 70 ceramic manufacturers producing tableware, tiles, and sanitaryware, with annual domestic sales of roughly USD 730 million. Over the past decade, production and investment have increased by nearly 150%. Exports to over 50 countries generate about USD 45 million annually, while total investment in the sector exceeds USD 1.6 billion, creating close to 500,000 direct and indirect jobs.
X Ceramics Group highlights growing opportunities in the US market, where 70% of ceramic demand is import-driven. As Wahed Azizur Rahman, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of X Ceramics Group noted, "India and China used to dominate the country's ceramics market. But after Donald Trump came to power and imposed high tariffs on those countries, a new opportunity has opened up for Bangladesh." However, challenges remain, including high energy costs, gas price volatility, imported raw materials, and rising wages. Industry leaders stress that tax relief, stable gas supply, and export facilitation are critical for scaling into a multi-billion-dollar sector.
