Aldi to Install Heat Pumps Across UK and Ireland Stores

UK/Ireland: Aldi has announced plans to install Vaillant air-source heat pumps across its entire store network in the UK and Ireland as part of its ongoing transition to renewable energy solutions. This initiative follows the installation of similar systems in Aldi’s regional distribution centres and headquarters. Since 2023, new stores have been fitted with Vaillant R290 heat pumps, and the programme is now expanding to retrofit existing locations with AroTherm Plus units. Each store will receive between two and five heat pumps, depending on its size, with the rollout expected to be completed by 2030. The initiative aligns with Aldi’s strategy to reduce carbon emissions, which includes installing solar panels on over 400 UK stores and switching to 100% renewable electricity.

To date, approximately 200 stores have been upgraded, with work beginning in England and now extending to Scotland, Wales, and the Republic of Ireland. The company has also implemented energy-saving measures such as adding fridge doors to reduce power consumption. Under a "no wasted heat" approach, heat generated from chillers is redirected to warm the stores, eliminating the need for gas heating and cooling. As part of the agreement, Vaillant will provide a 10-year service and support plan to ensure ongoing maintenance and efficiency.
