Affordable Housing Supply Shrinks to 13% in India's Top Six Cities
Houses

India: The supply of affordable housing, defined as units priced under Rs 40 lakh (47,000 USD approximately), in India's top six cities—Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Kolkata—has significantly decreased. In 2022, affordable homes made up 25.44% of new launches in these cities, but by the first quarter of 2024, the share fell to 18.03% and then to 13.24%. Real estate companies cited increasing costs as the primary reason for making such projects financially unviable, leading to the sharp decline in affordable housing development.
