Australia: Construction has commenced on an US$ 85 million build to rent housing development in Eastwood, located just outside the Adelaide central business district. The Wirra Mikangka project will deliver 151 apartments across two buildings of nine and five storeys, with ground floor retail and hospitality space and shared gardens overlooking the city's southeastern parklands. Of the total apartments, 121 are allocated for people on low and moderate incomes, including applicants from the South Australia Single Housing Register, while the remaining 30 units will be offered at market rent. Residents are expected to begin moving into the development by late next year.
The project is being delivered by Housing Choices SA and is one of the largest integrated builds to rent developments currently under construction in the state. According to Housing Choices Australia executive group director of homes Mark Hayward, the development responds to demand for affordable housing close to employment and services. Funding support for the project includes contributions from SA Housing Trust and Housing Australia.
